Photograph taken as planes unfold their wings on the deck prior to launching an attack against four Japanese carriers on the first day of the Battle of Midway.
Ten of the fourteen planes did not return.
Bowerbirds! have you heard of these Australian birds? They build these crazy elaborate nests, called bowers, to court females. Color coordinated, patterned, textural… some even “paint” the inside of their structures. these birds got skillz. They need gallery reps.

The top row are casts taken from soldiers mutilated faces, the bottom row shows masks of their faces before their injuries, made from pre-war photographs. On the table are masks made to fit over the disfigured part of the face. [ftp]

Damone- ‘Out here all night’
One of my favorite Damone jams as a follow up to my Noelle LeBlanc post. The first time I saw them was in Chicago with Hey Mercedes @ Metro in 2003. I hadn’t heard them before that set. That solo in “On my Mind”… still an amazing, awesomely harmonic piece of music. I also read their drummer Dustin Hengst passed away 2 days ago at age 39. sad news.
